The General Lee is the name given to a 1969 Dodge Charger driven by the Duke cousins Bo and Luke in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard. It is more than iconic, and I don’t think there’s an adult person out there who is not familiar with its signature horn, its police chases, stunts — especially its long jumps. The car appears in every episode but one (“Mary Kaye’s Baby”). Now we have all General Lee jumps from the show in one video!
All General Lee jumps in one video!
The name of the car is a reference to American Civil War general Robert E. Lee. Robert Edward Lee was an American soldier known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. That’s why the car bears a Confederate flag on its roof, and also has a horn which plays the first twelve notes of the song “Dixie”.
Fun fact: For the requirements of the show, they used around 320 1969 Dodge Chargers, most of which were wrecked. A fan theory recently came online stating that 1969 Chargers were so expensive today because they wrecked many of them in the show. The truth is, they wrecked around 300 cars on the show, but that year Dodge produced 70.000 of them! The price is most likely expensive because this car became so much more popular because of the show. Take a look at this awesome video of all General Lee jumps from the show! Back when there was no CGI and computer work in the movies, just real stuntmen and real cars!!
